‘Blinded By The Light’ [2019]

Viveik Kalra, Aaron Phagura, Nell Williams, Hayley Atwell

Movie is inspired by real life of British journalist (from Pakistan) Safraz Manzoor; by his book this screenplay was writen.

Unfortunately, I can’t say that our enthusiasm and love for music of Bruce Springsteen is at same level (nor nearly the same). So as someone who is indifferent to figure and work of mentioned musician, that aspect of movie didn’t impressed me much.

That certainly isn’t the reason to rate this movie in negative manner. If we put aside glorification of famous ‘The Boss’, we’ll have very good dramedy; feel-good drama with comedy elements, that is worth watching for sure.

Dramedy is showing life of Pakistanian teenager living in Luton in ’80s, struggling with race discrimination; growing up in family of ‘Pakis’ (how locals were calling them) where father’s permision was needed for everything; struggling with father’s strongly disagreement for his wish to become a writter, with support found only in his teacher.

His rebbel spirit accidentally discovers Springsteen’s music, easily got related with it and through his lyrics he managed to gain confidence to overcome daily struggles.

That other (‘non-musical’) side of movie was much more interesting to me. As much as seemed like fairy tale, and with many others ‘better’ feel-good titles with ‘coming of age’ thematics we could find, fact is still standing – from this movie we are getting much more then just simple soundtrack.
