Emma Stone, Emma Thompson, Mark Strong
This is one more example that an attractive movie trailer doesn’t necessarily mean an equally good movie. By saying that, I don’t want the conclusion to go in a negative context.
I can’t write anything negative because… Here’s E.Stone who I’ve been eagerly awaiting to see in this role, then the ‘always nice to see’ M.Strong, and of course E.Thompson to whom I personally don’t have any special sympathies, but she’s an obvious and proven acting size.
Just like ‘Joker’ (the last of course), the film approaches the main character from a different perspective, the psychological one, and that’s the main factor that will make us like this title (or not).
An accolade should certainly be given to the acting, to the soundtrack and to whole idea. The original story that reveals Cruella’s childhood, growing up without parents, finding the truth about her mother’s death and making an idea of revenge.
Since the story of fashion design has been run through the script (because she had to do something as a young girl) we will watch colorful outfits, listen to well-known (mostly rock) music tracks, learn about her friendship with Jasper and Horace, and of course – how Estella became Cruella.
In the role of an antagonist, instead of E.Thompson (also with superb performance) as the image of a villain, I would give the advantage to Christine Scott Thomas. We had a chance in last year’s headline ‘Rebecca’ to see how well she’s doing in such a role.
Conclusion? Top-notch Cruella’s character, makeup, costumes… E.Stone is showing us a new level of flexibility and transformation. I expected more malice and maybe more touchpoints with ‘the dalmatians story’, but that by no means categorises this title as a failure.
I’ll repeat the comparison with ‘Joker’, looking independently of previous titles on the subject, and that’s how it should be experienced. From that perspective, we’ll get a drama, interesting and fun in very own way.
